Home / About
Ask Mummy & Daddy was founded by Kane Dowell who started the concept in in his parents’ house in London which initially started as a hobby but then after more and more interest was shown he decided to quit his job which at the time was working as Operations Manager at Biscuiteers to really focus on growing the brand.
The time Kane really knew we had something was when he managed to get a meeting face to face at Selfridges head office with the head buyer for foods and then 6 weeks after the meeting the brand listed into Selfridges in 2017 and to this day the brand is still in the store as a main player within the confectionery market however that was just the start because now fast forward a few years since 2017 the business is now stocked in Fenwick stores and listed on Moonpig.com, Boomf & many other smaller delis/farm shops across the UK.
Growing the business hasn’t always been easy, Kane’s earlier background was leaving school at the age of 15 without a single GCSE and suffers from dyslexia he started working for brand Cath Kidston which at the time had only 1 store and he was there for 10 years leaving the business when they had over 100 stores worldwide. At the age of 21, Kane got himself in debt which to this day he still doesn’t know how or why but says it was one of those silly mistakes that many have done but now that is all behind him and always reminds the team that you have to make mistakes in life as it’s the only way to learn.
The company now is so different from 2017 when it was just two people as now we have our own production and hygiene team, accounts department as well as marketing and events team to help manage all events throughout the summer months when we are on the road attending events up and down the country. In 2020 the business is a lot different to when it started at the beginning but still the ethos remains, having worked in a big business Kane knows full well how things change but we still remain a small growing brand which hasn’t even touched the surfaces of what we really want to do which is make Ask Mummy & Daddy into one of the UK’s best and most trusted confectionery gifting brands.
In 2019 we sold over 10,000 jars of delicious sweets and we aim to double that in 2020.
All our packaging is 100% biodegradable and that includes the jars, lids, label and all the gift boxes (sadly not the sweets though)...
We cater for all dietary requirements from vegan, vegetarian as well as gluten and dairy free options.
We became the first company in the UK to sell gummy bears with real 24K Gold Leaf in them (these will return later in the year)!
Once the Beckham family visited our pop-up shop and used to come back every Saturday!
POP UP STORE OPENING
The beginning of 2017 saw the opening of our pop-up store in Notting Hill.
Originally the store was only meant to be open for 1 month but it proved to be so popular that we kept our doors open until October!
In 2019 we re-launched on Easter Monday with a complete re-brand from top to bottom which included our new Gift Boxes and Bottle Range. 2019 also saw the expansion of our range to cater for various dietary requirements such as Vegan, Vegetarian, Halal as well as Gluten & Dairy Free options.
Growing our team is very important to us and over the last year we have grown our team considerably which includes an accounts manager, sales & events team, food technician manager and someone who heads up all our social media channels. Here at Sweet HQ we always strive to work hard but also have fun which might include picnic in the park or drinks on the river both within 5 mins walk from our office.
